Degree in Theatre (Lighting Design)

Been practicing in the field since 2013

I have been working as a Lighting Designer in the live performance industry since I graduated college in 2013. At college, I majored in Theatre with a concentration in Lighting Design. I went on to intern at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., a world-renowned company at the front line of cutting edge new works. Since then I have been freelancing full time as a Lighting and Set designer for plays, musicals, events, concerts, etc. I have been nominated for 3 Best Lighting Design awards by Broadway World, and have also had the opportunity to design at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. for Chicago's The Second City. I currently work part time as the Lighting Director at Rock of Ages Hollywood. I'm also very interested in Landscape Design and have completed a course in Plant Identification at UCLA's Landscape Design extension school. I think my strengths are listening to and understanding the needs of the client, creating vibrant designs that are both beautiful and practical, and understanding the visuospatial experience. I'm friendly, communicative, and reliable. I thrive both independently and in a collaborative environment.

Get To Know Me!

When did you realize you had a passion for your profession?

The first lighting design I ever did was for my high school's production of the musical Pippin. At the beginning of the show when Pippin is born, the baby was held up from behind a white sheet. I lit the sheet with a bold yellow from a low side angle, and the intense drama it created in the folds of the sheet really stirred my heart. That was the first time I got a sense for what lighting can do on a visceral emotional level.

Interior Design Professionals are typically experienced with a variety of styles. Describe your favorite spaces you have created:

While it may not be appropriate for many interior design applications, the directors that call me often are those looking for something stark, dramatic, and bold. I am known for my minimalist but saturate color palette, and my affinity for dark, moody scenes. A favorite project of mine was for a performance piece called Tarot. It was thematically based on a Tarot card reading and I was hired to do the Lighting and Set design. We had a small budget, so a lot of it was spent getting interesting light fixtures and seating second-hand, and then dressing it up with natural materials to give it a witchy feel. I gave dining chairs antlers made of branches and painted them in bold patterns, draped the space with warm fabrics and soft lights, and built a huge circular ceiling piece out of twisting wisteria vines to hang over the performance space.

Favorite places you have visited that sparked your artistic side or inspired you to design:

New Orleans, Istanbul, Denali, Malibu Creek, The Huntington Gardens

Your top 3 favorite foods to eat if all food was equally healthy:

Breakfast Sandwiches

Bun Cha

Ice Cream

Any other languages you are fluent in?

No sadly, I only know a few snippets of Spanish, but I'm not at a conversational level.

 Fun fact about you:

I'm an avid rock climber! I love the abundance of local crags in California :)
